My Facebook.com Experience
I, as you will soon tell, don't surf the web very much. I go to my familiar sites and that's about it. I have never even checked out the My Space stuff b/c I was told by news that it was full of wacky stuff and apparently some messed up people. But over Christmas, my friend Gretchen mentioned finding another High School friend through Facebook. I hadn't heard of that site so I decided to check it out. I just wanted to see who and how you found people.
I wasn't on the site 2 minutes before I made my first mistake. I created a profile. I originally thought that I had to have a profile to search for someone. So, I did. Very short... the basics. Having no choice but to use my email address in my profile, Facebook immediately brought up my Hotmail contacts list and told me everyone in my address book who had a Facebook page. I thought "Coolbeans, that was easy!" I was able to check on about 15 friends no problemo! That was mistake number 2. I just didn't know it yet.
The next day, when I checked my email, I had about 15 facebook messages. They all said that "so-so has confirmed you as one of their friends". I was shocked then embarrassed! I had no idea that who I checked on would know that I checked on them. I thought I had checked those pages anonymously. Thankfully, they were all friends. But I never once clicked anything asking Facebook to send them a message. At the time, I didn't intend to ever go back to that site. It was going to be a one time search, but Facebook had other plans.
I have gone back and even joined a group (someone from church made a class group). I still don't really know what I am doing, but it is fun to have something else to check.
So if you go to Facebook, just to check it out, DO NOT make a profile unless you want to be found!
